It turns out having example files is very relevant here.

I created a chart based on external data using these steps:

However, I don't know how to do the step 2 from comment 0 "modify a single
character in the corresponding path for the data range so that such a file
should not be found". If I try via Edit - Links to External Files, the data
never disappears even if I use Break Link.

So we absolutely need example files for this.
