It would be very helpful to be able to italicize or otherwise style index
entries.

Books, movies and newspapers are typically italicized.  

Perhaps one solution would be to allow the use of autocorrect feature as per
https://help.libreoffice.org/latest/en-ZA/text/shared/01/06040100.html :

"Automatic *bold*, /italic/, -strikeout- and _underline_"

"Automatically applies bold, italic, strikethrough or underline formatting to
text enclosed by asterisks (*), slashes (/), hyphens (-), and underscores (_),
respectively. These characters disappear after the formatting is applied."

The Edit Index Entry window could be extended to have an option to enable the
autocorrect feature for the Entry.
