About the workaround. Attachment 53292 suggests to use the "Special
Footnote/Endnote", and type the number together with the leading / trailing
stuff. It goes on to tell that the downside is "you have to correct the
footnote's numbering manually every time you made any changes in the document",
which is true for the suggested workaround.

Another workaround is to use the normal automatic footnote number, but type the
leading/trailing stuff around the anchor manually, in the normal text; and
apply the same character style to it, as defined for footnote anchor-in-text in
Tools->Footnote/Endnote Settings. This allows for the automatic numbering to do
its magic. The inserted leading/trailing stuff, together with the character
style, may be saved as an autotext.
