--- Comment #86 from Jacques <[email protected]> --- Bug 35694 seems to relate to the cumbersome page numbering system in LO. Since updating to version 24.2.7.2 on Ubuntu, the problem seems to be worse. Whether this is due to a bug, or unclear documentation, I can't figure out. But I have tried all the possible suggestions available online on page numbering, and I am still stuck (see personal note at the bottom) While page numbering has always been problematic, the UI is now over-complicated with 4 sets of process in 4 different UI windows: *1 Format --> Page Style --> Page The location on the page where page number appears is set here - depending on document binding type (facing pages, or not, etc) *2 Format --> Title Page The UI (and documentation) is unclear about what "Insert new title pages" means. I have experimented with different numbers of title pages. LO ignores that as when I go back there, a different number appears to what I've set. *3 Format --> Paragraph This weird process requires the user to select the first paragraph of the page where page numbers are supposed to start. This does not work as settings in *1 and *2 seem to impact on whatever is displayed here. Personally, I don't understand the logic. What should happen is that the page number position's insertion is anchored, not matter where the user places it, and without having to first select a position (the first paragraph) hat has no sensible connection (from UI's perspective) with the planned position. *4 Insert Page Number This step involves clicking on the page position where the page number is to be inserted (so why is *3 above necessary?). There are conflicts between this step, and any setting in *1 Also, if there is footer text, the inserted position goes wonky, messes up footer text, which has to be fixed manually. Personal note: I am very grateful to the LO developing community. Thanks a lot guys - so forgive my gripe. I've been using document editors since my first computer early in the 1980s, which was WordStar on an Osborne. Since then I've used doc editing apps on just about every platform, and zillions of versions of many different editors. My fave is still the approach by AmiPro of mid-1990s. - with modeless pop-up windows. But I really am struggling with LO's page numbering system. It never works out the way I want it. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
