Bug ID: 168016
Summary: Autocorrect for spelling is misbehaving
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 6.4.7.2 release
Hardware: All
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
I am a writer and frustrated beyond belief.
As a writer, the word processor is my life and it needs to behave properly.
This means that words can not be randomly changed each time I save a document
...especially... when it's being autosaved. This is out of my direct control.
I have nine manuscripts, some in the 50,000 word range and some closer to
100,000 words. When I type 'that,' 'there' or 'their,' I need these words to
stay put and not randomly be changed to 'this,' 'they're' or 'then.' I
apologize for shouting to emphasize my point... I HAVE WATCHED MY DOCUMENTS DO
THIS BEFORE MY OWN EYES, especially when autosaving. Do I have video of this? I
might, at some point take the laborious time out of my writing life to put a
OBS video up and hope Libra Writer misbehaves in the process ...however... I do
have to work so I can eat, pay for electricity...etc. For context on this, I
have noted this issue for more than ten years. I do apologize for not
complaining expeditiously, but as said, I'm rather busy. 100,000 word stories
take a bit of time to write. They take longer when I have random glitches that
no one else seems to be noticing... or perhaps all the editors complaining
about writers not knowing the difference between their 'theres' isn't actually
an author's problem, but a programing one???
My current solution (besides putting all files in a text only archive) had been
to shut down autocorrect. Tedious, but the pain of running through a 100k
document to make certain all my 'theres' are in a row is beyond painful.
Please, I am a starving artist at present and can't afford to upgrade to
Vellum. I'd be ever so grateful for someone to look into this. And yes, it's
not only the specified words autocorrect likes to mess with. I have had
character names changed, especially ones that are oddly spelled along side
other random bits and bobs.
Key words: auto, autocorrect, autosave, spell check, spelling
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Using autocorrect all the time
2.typing a long document
3.sometimes having odd character names that are unconventional
Actual Results:
The only known way to produce this is to have autocorrect for spelling enabled
and keeping it active. It is rather random, but happens most often when auto
save cycles.
Expected Results:
The software should have no business changing anything that has been hard saved
by me using the save function. I get that chasing down an autosave malfunction
might be tediously difficult and I'm willing to live without the function of
autocorrect.
Reproducible: Sometimes
User Profile Reset: Yes
Additional Info:
This has been a long standing issue. I continue to forget that I've had the
issue before when stepping away from writing and then returning after a year,
or several years. Also, it's minor enough and my current solution of turning
off autocorrect does work well enough that you might find fixing this
inconvenient. As an author of several books, not having full functionality of
an otherwise competent word processor is frustrating.
