Only the datas are moved. So it needs anyway to remove the > previous column at the end. That's not how it works for me on Windows: I click anywhere within the selected block and start dragging. Thicker borders appear for the selection. I press and hold the Alt key and drag the column beyond another column. It gets moved and the old one does not remain in position.
