Bug ID: 168091
Summary: Some users dislike menus extending upwards from
anchor/click point
Product: LibreOffice
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: UI
Assignee: [email protected]

When a user clicks a menu, or right-clicks somewhere with a context menu, they
typically expect the menu to extend downwards from the point of clicking (or
from the menu name). An exception is when you're low on the screen, in which
case the menu might extend fully upwards; but let's ignore that for now. A more
problematic situation is when you're not actually at the bottom of the screen,
but in the middle or near the top, yet - the menu has many items, and your
display is not very tall. In these cases, it is sometimes the case that the
menu extends both upwards and downwards, and your pointer is at some arbitrary
point. Moreover, in such cases, the menu many extend onto the toolbars, menu
bar, title bar and even further (although such behavior may be VCL-dependent).
Some users find this behavior undesirable. While it maximizes the number of
items visible on the screen, that is often not enough, and one still needs to
scroll; but what's more problematic is the hiding of too much of the UI for
their taste - it's disorienting and prevents the use of your "muscle memory" to
locate items on the menu. These users would rather the menu extend downwards,
like it usually does, with its further items accessible only by
scrolling/pressing a bottom button which scrolls etc.
I believe we should at least have some option to control this behavior
("greedy" upwards extension); and maybe even consider changing the default
beahvior.
