            Bug ID: 168121
           Summary: Writer 25.8 – highlighting a word causes extra-wide
                    spaces before and after it
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: 25.8.0.4 release
          Hardware: ARM
                OS: macOS (All)
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: medium
         Component: Writer
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]

Description:
When highlighting (applying background colour) to a single word in Writer, the
spaces immediately before and after the highlighted word render significantly
wider. Only the word itself is highlighted (no spaces selected). The space
characters remain single spaces (shown as a single dot with formatting marks),
but they are visually expanded horizontally.

This does not appear to be related to leading or justification.

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open a new Writer document.
2.Type a sentence with multiple words (e.g., “This is a test sentence.”).
3.Select one word (only the word, not the spaces).
4.Apply a highlight colour (using the toolbar “Highlight Colour” tool).

Actual Results:
The word is highlighted, but the spaces before and after it are rendered wider
than normal (though still shown as a single space in formatting marks).

Expected Results:
Only the word should be highlighted. Spaces before and after should remain
their normal width.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: Yes

Additional Info:
Tested with Arial.

Problem persists with Skia rendering enabled. Disabling Skia (Tools → Options →
LibreOffice → View → Use Skia for all rendering) does not resolve the issue.

Regression: this behaviour did not occur before the upgrade.
