Bug ID: 168192
Summary: outdated fonts-farsiweb package
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 25.2.5.2 release
Hardware: All
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: LibreOffice
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
Hello.
When installing the package libreoffice-l10n-fa on Debian/Ubuntu-based
distributions (including Linux Mint), the package fonts-farsiweb is pulled in
as a dependency.
However, the `fonts-farsiweb` package is outdated and has not been maintained
for many years. Its typefaces are of lower quality compared to modern
libre/open-source Persian fonts such as Vazirmatn
[https://github.com/rastikerdar/vazirmatn]
Forcing the installation of `fonts-farsiweb` not only clutters the system with
obsolete fonts, but also discourages users from adopting the modern,
well-designed, and properly maintained Persian typefaces.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install `libreoffice-l10n-fa` on Ubuntu/Mint/Debian.
2. Observe that `fonts-farsiweb` is automatically installed as a dependency.
Actual Results:
`fonts-farsiweb` is always installed with `libreoffice-l10n-fa`, even though it
is obsolete.
Expected Results:
The package `libreoffice-l10n-fa` should not hard-depend on outdated fonts.
Instead, it should either:
Recommend more modern and maintained fonts (such as `Vazirmatn` or
* Leave font choice to the system/user, without enforcing the installation of
`fonts-farsiweb`.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
