Bug ID: 168242
Summary: Request for "Text to Columns" Menu Change
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 3.3.0 release
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium
Component: Calc
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
I'm writing to suggest an improvement to the label of the "Text to Columns"
feature in LibreOffice Calc.
While the current name accurately describes its main function of splitting
text, it can be misleading for users who discover its secondary, but very
useful, function of converting text to numbers. When a cell contains a number
formatted as text, using "Text to Columns" is the primary way to force the
program to recognize it as a number, allowing for proper formatting and
calculations.
However, the current label is counterintuitive for this use case. To a new
user, a "Text to Columns" tool has nothing to do with numbers.
I propose changing the name of this feature to something that better reflects
its full functionality. Here are a few suggestions:
* **Cell Format Parser:** This is technically accurate, as the tool parses the
data type of the cell's content.
* **Split & Convert:** This is more user-friendly and clearly describes both of
the tool's main functions.
* **Data Reformat Tool:** A more general term that covers both text splitting
and data type conversion.
Thank you for your consideration.
Steps to Reproduce:
When looking for a column of cells with numbers that won't reformat because
Calc sees them as text, it would help for a more intuitive menu label than
"Text to Columns."
Actual Results:
Many will be confused by current label and unable to find remedy.
Expected Results:
A more "user friendly" name for the command "Text to Labels" (which actually is
the solution to the problem.)
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: Yes
Additional Info:
Thank your for your consideration.
