The red comes from the paragraph style - so it is legitimate.
Direct formatting sets the first two characters to automatic color.
No automatic color information is sent to xhtml. Probably xhtml has no way to
specify automatic color?

If xhtml has no way to specify "automatic color", then it is not possible to
override a specified color provided by a style. Hard-coding as black would be a
terrible idea if the background was also black.

So, since "automatic" can mean anything, then 'red' isn't actually wrong...

NEEDINFO: does CSS/xhtml have a way to specify a color as automatic?
