--- Comment #22 from george <[email protected]> --- I am writing to add my voice in strong support of this long-standing request for automatic language detection for spell checking in LibreOffice Writer (Bug 91766). This is not a mere convenience; it is an essential feature for anyone who regularly works with multilingual texts, be it translators, international businesses, or academics. When drafting a document that switches between two or more languages—even within the same paragraph—the current necessity to manually select the language for every single word or paragraph is a significant, productivity-killing friction point. This constant manual switching breaks the flow of writing and editing. We must acknowledge that this is an area where the competition has long held a crucial advantage. As noted in the bug report, our main competitor, Microsoft Word, has offered reliable automatic language detection for spell checking for almost two decades. For many professional users, particularly those working across borders and languages, the absence of this basic functionality in LibreOffice remains the single biggest barrier to making a permanent switch. The technology is proven, reliable, and available. Implementing a modern, machine learning-based approach, as recently suggested in the comments, would finally close this gap and instantly elevate LibreOffice Writer into a truly competitive and enjoyable tool for global communication. I urge the design team to give this enhancement the high priority it deserves. Implementing this would not only address a nearly ten-year-old bug report but also demonstrate a commitment to the productivity of the vast number of users who work in a multilingual world. Thank you for your hard work and consideration. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are the assignee for the bug.
