--- Comment #35 from Saren Tasciyan <[email protected]> --- Coming back many years later, I think that on Ubuntu it was rather Gnome's issue related to a type of older remote network (NFS vs GVFS or smth), which is replaced now. Many other applications froze as well into the Z (zombie) state and could not recover. It was enough that a recent file was on a remote drive, where GNOME was trying to access the file for some reason (why would you try to open all recent files?!) part of perhaps applications' processes.
