Once GDRIVE was ruled out as the likely source of the problem, I deleted this folder and performed further tests on the original version. I couldn't reopen my file because the link to the spreadsheet was no longer correct: LO insisted on the spreadsheet from the folder on the desktop that I had deleted. I may have made a mistake somewhere, but it's surprising that a file can no longer be opened if an external link cannot be resolved.
