I don't know. No doubt I lack imagination, but isn't Material 3 Expressive - a
new merger of font and icon design - addressing different issues from the one
that this bug/thread (particularly Michael's contribution) addresses (an
unresolved font characterization issue with origins in the beginnings of MS
Office and Star Office)?

Moreover, is it fair to say that "Material 3 Expressive ... highlights a
significant gap in LibreOffice", when it has only come to Google Docs within
the last few days (and of course not at all to MS Office)? 

I'm not saying that this new technology is not worth pursuit and eventual
incorporation into LO, just that I don't see how it fits into the scope of this
bug. That said, if this becomes a new enhancement request, it may be good
background to inform the thoughts in this thread, so thanks for raising it.
