Bug ID: 169772
Summary: Calc ignores cell line breaks when opening .xlsx files
containing multiple sheets — occasional loss of
newline in cells (≈1 in 30 opens)
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 25.8.3.2 release
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Calc
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
When opening certain .xlsx files in LibreOffice Calc that contain multiple
sheets, cell-internal line breaks (created via Ctrl+Enter) are occasionally
lost or ignored.
This issue does not appear when the workbook has only a single sheet.
For example: I open an .xlsx file (originally created in Excel or another tool)
in Calc. If the file contains more than one sheet, then roughly 1 out of 30
times the cell that previously had a multi-line entry will appear as a single
line (newline removed or ignored).
If the same .xlsx file is opened while having only one sheet, the line breaks
are preserved consistently.
The problem also occurs when the .xlsx is processed via a service using
LibreOffice internally (for example via Gotenberg), indicating this is not
limited to the GUI version of LibreOffice Calc.
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Start LibreOffice Calc (or use a service that uses LibreOffice internally).
2.Open the attached .xlsx file which contains more than one sheet.
3.Observe cell A20 (on the first sheet). This cell was created with manual
newlines (e.g. via Ctrl+Enter).
4.In roughly one out of thirty opening attempts, the cell’s internal newline is
lost.
5.(For control) Copy the same .xlsx file, then reduce it to a single sheet
(delete or hide other sheets), and open with Calc again — in this case, cell
A20 reliably keeps its newline and displays as multi-line.
Actual Results:
•The cell A20 (which should contain multiple lines) is shown as a single line.
•Internal newline characters appear to be stripped or ignored.
•Issue occurs only when the workbook contains multiple sheets; when limited to
a single sheet, newline is preserved reliably.
Expected Results:
•Regardless of how many sheets the workbook contains, internal newlines in
cells (e.g. A20) should always be preserved on open.
•Multi-line cell content created with newline characters should always be
displayed and handled as multi-line entries.
Reproducible: Sometimes
