Bug ID: 170666
Summary: Bitmap icons → Vector icons
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.2.0.3 release
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer

Feature Request / Enhancement
LibreOffice already ships with SVG-based icon themes, but bitmap (PNG) icons
are still used by default in many installations.
I would like to propose making SVG icons the default icon format for
LibreOffice.
Motivation:
SVG icons scale cleanly on HiDPI and mixed-DPI displays without blurring.
They provide better visual consistency across different screen resolutions and
UI scaling factors.
They improve accessibility by keeping icons sharp and easier to recognize.
They reduce the need to maintain multiple raster icon sizes.
SVG is the modern standard for UI icons in many desktop environments.
Current situation:
SVG icon themes already exist and work well.
Users must manually select an SVG-based icon theme.
Proposed change:
Use an SVG-based icon theme as the default for new installations.
Keep the current behavior for upgraded installations to avoid surprising users.
This change would modernize the LibreOffice user interface and improve the
experience especially on high-resolution displays.
Thank you for considering this enhancement.
