I agree with Resolved, Not A Bug.

Just a few hours ago I was pointed to oasis-open.org and found the function
definitions to be clear about the situation.  

But yesterday this was the root of my error ...

... because it says, flatly, that one can use a "name of a named range", which
in detail is not true as not all named ranges are valid arguments. Only certain
types are permitted. When that failed, I tried the more simple SUMIF, which my
'named range' broke as well. 

Perhaps the SUMIFS page needs to have more detail. I'd say it's plain wrong if
that were not rude. 

Anyway, my initial problem was my ignorance. Has been all my life. Continues to
be. Thank you for helping me out in this situation.
