Note that if you select the _entire_ sequence of characters of a given style,
this behavior does not manifest. So, amend the reproduction instructions as
follows:

1. Copy and paste this sentence into Libreoffice Writer (yes, this one!).
2. Select the words "paste this sentence into" and highlight them in a
background color of your choice (for instance, bright yellow).
3. Clear the selection (to avoid any special effects of the fact that we acted
on the selection; although it doesn't actually matter).
4. Select the words "paste this sentence into"
5. Type "insert" instead.

When you do this, the "insert" _does_ appear highlit with Yellow. That is, LO
distinguishes the case of overwriting the entire formatted sequence of
charaters and just the beginning of it.
