I don't think we should introduce other ways to count formatting. First of all it is just one way to change the layout - you could also use font color, font weight, etc. And we should promote using styles rather than supporting special workflows with direct formatting. If you define a character style with a meaning, let's say "Emphasis" (which actually exists!), and apply this to the various places where your content needs accentuation, you could later change the appearance consistently across the document. And if there is a convincing use case, I could imagine to show the number of paragraphs or phrases in the respective PS/CS tooltip.
