Neither of the options I suggested involve using the same highlighting but with
a different color.

However - that is not an inconceivable third option, if you consider the Writer
selection color - which is not deep blue, but pale blue. Not exactly sure how
that would work out, but it is a third possibility.

That's not technically true, since Writer styles typically don't specify a
white-color background (= area); they have no-background.

But it is also _materially_ not true, because when an item is selected, the
preview could very well show what content in the selected style would look like
when it's _selected_. And when you select text in writer, the background is not
deep blue.

While  that is a possible outcome of a reworking of the gallery, it is not the
only outcome. If that were to happen, then we could probably close this bug;
but let's not count our eggs before they are hatched.
