Bug ID: 171097
Summary: "Automatic" character set on CSV import is misleading
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.8.0.0 alpha0+ master
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Keywords: needsUXEval
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Calc

When I import a CSV/TSV file into Calc, and the import dialog opens, the
default choice for the Character Set is "Automatic". What the user would
understand this to mean is that LibreOffice would read/parse the CSV, detect
which charset it was written in, and import using that charset (and perhaps ask
me or tell me if no single charset is a perfect match, or if it can't tell
etc).
Instead, there is nothing "automatic"; the CSV is imported using a fixed
charset independent of the file contents.
It seems the item text should be "Use fallback Character Set" or "Use default
Character Set" or something along those lines.
