Users requested that behavior. It wasn’t the original OOo/LibreOffice behavior
and it was seen as a deficiency.

How do you clear the text you inserted in a paragraph? Direction is not
formatting (even vertical text, e.g. Mongolian mist be vertical LTR, there is
no horizontal Mongolian text), but you are fixated on the idea that direction
is formatting.
