            Bug ID: 171241
Summary: Enhancement Request: Add "Sheet Background Image"
support with scaling and opacity control to Calc
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: Inherited From OOo
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: enhancement
          Priority: medium
         Component: Calc
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]

Description:
[Current Situation]
Currently, LibreOffice Calc allows setting a background color or inserting
images as objects. However, unlike Microsoft Excel, there is no native function
to set an image as a "Sheet Background" that resides behind cells without being
a selectable object.

[Problem]

In educational and scientific contexts, we often need to overlay data points
(cells) on top of geographical maps or specialized charts.

When images are inserted as objects, students often accidentally select/move
the image, disrupting the data entry process.

Setting an image via "Page Layout" (as in Excel) is currently missing, which
causes compatibility issues when opening .xlsx files.

[Proposed Feature]
I would like to propose a "Sheet Background Image" feature with the following
capabilities:

Fixed Background: An image that stays behind cells and cannot be moved/selected
during normal cell editing.

Scaling/Alignment: Options to scale the image (Stretch, Tile, or Fit to
specific cell ranges).

Opacity Control: A slider to adjust the transparency of the background image so
that cell gridlines and data remain visible (e.g., 50% opacity).

Excel Compatibility: Improved rendering and synchronization of the "Background"
feature when importing/exporting Excel files.

[User Benefit]
This feature would be a game-changer for teachers and researchers who use
spreadsheets for geospatial data visualization and biome mapping. It would
allow for a more stable and professional user experience, preventing accidental
image manipulation by students.

Actual Results:
Currently, there is no dedicated "Sheet Background Image" feature in Calc. The
only way to simulate a background is to insert an image as an object and move
it to the back. However, this object remains selectable, which interferes with
cell selection and data entry, especially in educational settings where
students accidentally move or delete the map image.

Expected Results:
A native "Sheet Background" feature similar to Microsoft Excel. The image
should be locked behind the cells (non-selectable during normal editing) and
provide options for transparency (opacity) and scaling to fit specific cell
ranges. This would ensure a stable environment for data visualization and
educational templates.

Reproducible: Always

User Profile Reset: No

Additional Info:
[Critical issue with current workaround]
When an image is simply inserted and moved to the background, it still behaves
as a graphical object. This means that users (especially students) cannot
directly click or select the cells located underneath the image.

To select a cell, one must click outside the image area and navigate into the
map using arrow keys, or use the "Selection Pane" to hide the image
temporarily. This is extremely counter-intuitive for educational use. A native
"Sheet Background" feature should allow cells to be fully interactive
(clickable and selectable) as if the image were part of the spreadsheet's
canvas itself, just like in Microsoft Excel.
