Clearing direct formatting also reveals the proper characters. It's the same in oldest of Windows 4.3 bibisect repo. For me, the font assigned to the rectangles is Arial. In attachment 206111 on the other hand, it is Lucida Sans. The text on the page is inside <i> tags.
