Workaround is to cut the content, merge the cells and paste the cut content. If the visible cell is not empty, you get a merge dialog to decide about the behavior. In that situation it is not possible to bring the formula from the hidden cell to the visible cell because the visible cell has already content. But the dialog allows to keep the formula in the hidden cell. And references to the moved content have to be adapted. That is currently not the case.
