You need to compile with "-ggdb" option to gcc, and then read
http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/qa/backtraces.xml#doc_chap1_sect3 (section
"Stripping") to see how to tell portage not to remove the information added by
-ggdb (that is, the symbols that gdb needs to provide a meaningul backtrace).

My understanding is that Toni gets a crash even before he can select a file or
click the debug icon. My understanding is that the crash happens "as soon as"
he clicks on the "Open an existing database" radio choice.
