But the frame is selected. Why should clicking inside the frame not let me edit
its content? I should be able to do this with the mouse, without memorizing the
right shortcut key.

That's fine for the borders; but why should that be the behavior for clicking
the interior?

Note that:

* If a table cell is selected and I click its interior, the selection is
cleared and I see the cursor inside.

* If a drawing shape is selected and I double-click its interior, the selection
is cleared and I see the cursor inside.
