Sounds like simple auto-correction. It asserts when you end the paragraph by
starting a new line.

You can turn it off.

Tools -> AutoCorrect -> AutoCorrect Options

'Delete spaces and tabs at beginning and end of paragraph'
'Delete spaces and tabs at end and start of line'

The two checkmark columns [M] is while modifying, [T] is while typing in new
content.

Adjust them to meet your work flow.

Also note that each "line" made with an <Enter> starts a new paragraph. The new
paragraph will assert its style and formatting as applied. While all lines
split with a <Shift><Enter> remain in one single paragraph.

Best to think of your content not as lines, but as paragraphs that span
multiple lines within margins of the document.
