Bug ID: 171931
Summary: Customize Window - Left sidebar - Visual clarity
issues
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.2.2.2 release
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: LibreOffice
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
`Customize` window now shows sections in a sidebar at the left of window,
instead of tabs at the top of window. I like the idea to put in left sidebar,
really cleans up the window.
However, because these buttons are based on themes, and more specifically how
themes handle tabs, I noticed this could cause some visual issues.
ICONS + TEXT
I think it was a good idea to add category icons to this sidebar, but this
could also add to these visual issues as well.
Icons + text names under them is something that is typically offered in
toolbars, however when done in a sidebar, depending on the theme used, this
could look a little jumbled because they are stacked above and below each other
where label text appears above and below icons which can be a little visually
confusing. For example, some themes make these category buttons appear as
buttons, meaning they have divider lines that separate them, but other themes
do not, they just appear as flat buttons.
ICONS
Depending on theme some icons are hard to see and might get washed out visually
completely when selected.
FONT SIZE
Depending on what font size user has set for their desktop environment can
cause issues with visual selection appearance of these buttons as well.
I will give some examples below for themes.
Because all themes are different, I think really the only thing I can recommend
is maybe adding a little more space between each of the 5 category buttons so
they are not as close/stacked on top of each other.
Steps to Reproduce:
I tried to pick out two of the more common themes used in Linux, to use as
examples.
Numbering used here is list of issues noticed, rather then "steps to reproduce"
Theme: Adwaita / Adwaita-Dark
1. This is example of flat buttons (no separator lines)
2. Without divider lines between sections, the icons and text labels can look
confusing because there is text label above and below most of the icons.
3. This theme shows a vertical color line to the right of the button as an
indicator that that category is selected. It almost can appear to look like a
vertical scroll bar is present.
4. If user changes font size used in DE from 10 to 12 or more, this could cause
issues with selection indicator.
When this is done, then a dotted rectangle appears around the button/selection
and the dotted rectangle is very close to the top of the sections icon and the
bottom of its label text.
Because the dotted rectangle outline is actually shorter then the vertical
color line selection indicator.
(Strange because this dotted rectangle outline issue did not occur for me when
I tried this in Calc - Macro Edit window, which also has its own `Customize`
window.
-----------------------------------------------
Theme: Greybird
1. This is example of visual buttons (rectangle outline buttons)
(Easier to see because each category is in a rectangle/button)
2. The `Context Menu` icon is a white outline.
This theme uses white background rectangle for the size of the entire button,
making this button washed out, cannot see icon.
Actual Results:
Shown in steps to reproduce above
Expected Results:
For category buttons to appear clearly when selected and not selected.
As I mentioned above, because all themes are different, I do not think this is
going to be able to be fixed for all of them.
I would keep the left sidebar
The only suggestions I could make are maybe to....
-Put a little more spacing between each categories button so that it is more
clear what icon goes with what label.
-Look into what happens with different DE font sizes and see if there is a
universal fix that could prevent any visual issues.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
Additional Info:
Hopefully something mentioned here was worth spending the time I put into this.
