I have no idea why they use such an old version on a new install of a major package. Maybe you should have a talk with the Mint maintainers (mainstream version, which seems to take packages from Ubuntu). I could not find "appearance" in the tools / options menu... Another possibility - I changed to new hardware, but just transplanted the SSD. Could there be some GPU adaptations that don't happen ?
