Bug ID: 172187
Summary: Calc: long formulas edited directly in a cell are
wrapped/clipped to the cell width, making in-cell
formula editing difficult
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.2.3.2 release
Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium
Component: Calc
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
When editing a long formula directly inside a Calc cell, the formula editor
appears constrained to the current cell width. If the column is narrow, the
formula text is wrapped into many short visual lines and becomes hard to read,
select, navigate, and edit.
This is especially problematic with complex formulas containing nested
functions, localized function names, several parentheses, and references. In
this situation, the formula is technically editable, but the editing area is so
narrow that acting on a specific part of the formula becomes unnecessarily
difficult.
The Formula Bar can be expanded and used as a workaround, but this does not
solve the usability problem of direct in-cell editing. Direct cell editing is
still useful because it keeps the formula close to the referenced cells and
allows more natural editing in context.
Attached screenshot shows a long localized Calc formula being edited inside a
narrow cell, where the formula is wrapped into many very short lines and
becomes hard to manipulate.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open LibreOffice Calc.
2. Create or open a spreadsheet.
3. Use a narrow column.
4. Insert a long formula into a cell, for example a formula with several nested
functions.
5. Press F4/F2 or double-click the cell to edit the formula directly in the
cell. Observe that the formula text is constrained to the cell width and wraps
into many short lines.
Actual Results:
The formula text is visually wrapped/clipped according to the narrow
cell/column width while editing directly in the cell. This makes long formulas
very hard to work with.
Result:
The formula becomes visually cramped and difficult to edit.
Expected Results:
When editing a formula directly in a cell, Calc should provide a usable editing
area for long formulas. Possible solutions would be:
Allow the in-cell formula editing box to extend horizontally beyond the cell
width, as happens with normal overflowing cell text display.
Provide a wider temporary edit overlay while the cell is in edit mode.
Offer an option to disable wrapping/clipping of in-cell formula editing to the
cell width.
Make direct cell formula editing behave more like the Formula Bar input area.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: Yes
