Please do not assume that your use-case and your personal expectations are the
same for everyone. Other users might not want for these kind of characters to
be displayed on every situation.

A normal space character is also not marked in any special way in Calc. The
difference with a zero-width character is that when there are other characters
around a normal space character, then you can notice it is there, but if a cell
contains only a space character, or an empty string (""), it is not obvious and
you still have to use Calc's functions to test for such cases.

Writer has the possibility to show some kind of marker ("View Field Shadings").
I do not know whether there is a similar possibility in Calc. If there is such
an option, we should test it (and bisect the change being reported here, if it
different than what was already reported in comment 4). If there is no such an
option in Calc, the possibility should be created / implemented.
