The real problem was that even if I removed the link from 'edit>external links>disconnect link', it was still present in the validity rules of some cells. Therefore, you must first remove the cell validity rules for that file, after which you can disconnect the external file; otherwise, calc will find it in the validity rules and reinsert it into the external links list.
