Advanced Filters are based on a special cell range, that contains the filter criteria. This filter criteria have in the first row the labels of a database range. The criteria themselves are in following rows. Thus it is mandatory that the to be filtered database range has column labels. See chapter 15 in the Calc Guide. If you want to get no duplicates, then use the Standard Filter with criterion "not empty".
