I create a new Text document using 3.6.0.4, menu Insert->Picture->From file, select a .JPG picture (rather wide - it shrinks to borders of paragraph), save the file as .odt. Then open it using 4.1.0.4. It opens OK. It may well be a Mac-specific bug.
