Somewhat off-topic, but...

DOCX bug 118214 suggests a different (interoperable) way that keeps this
information as part of the document itself. IIUC, it would require extending
ODT.

Apparently in MS Word you can mark a word as 'noProof' to ignore
grammar/spell-checking. Of course once that is done, it is (somewhat) hard to
reverse that 'formatting'.
[Select All, Review tab - Language - Set Proofing Language - 'Do not check
spelling or grammar'.]

A user could emulate this right now by creating a character style with a [None]
language. Although tedious to apply, it would effectively duplicate Microsoft's
approach.
