I can confirm this issue was entirely the fault of the os,

this was a new mac that was migrated from happy working install, this user
rents the mac and gets a new one every two years and this was the 5 time
the mac had been migrated, it was on 10.4 and going to 10.6 os on the new
machine, somehow the Arial font was corrupted and that was the default for
the spreadsheet  That is why some existing sheets worked and some did not
and well as all new did not work. The fix was to re-install Arial,  I
wonder if the app (Libre) had any type of error code when it was rendering
with a defective font, and if so could it give a message or use another
font.  This issue may seam easy now but in reality i have over 20 hours in
it and it was baffling. So lesson leaned,. (fontbook pointed out there was
a problem with the font)
