Bug ID: 172645
Summary: Feature Request: Add a dedicated "Equal Row Spacing /
Row Height" input field for vertically distributing
objects in Writer and Draw, mimicking table row
functionality.
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 24.2.7.2 release
Hardware: All
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: enhancement
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
Currently, when trying to space a set of objects, text blocks, or shapes
vertically within a specific boundary (for example, creating a precise grid of
4 rows within a 14 cm x 14 cm container), there is no simple menu option or
input box to define exact vertical spacing. While a standard table makes
managing row heights and row spacing incredibly straightforward down to the
millimeter, independent shapes and objects do not have access to this type of
structured row control.
To enable better support for rows outside of a traditional table structure,
vertical spacing currently requires manual calculation using individual object
Y-axis coordinates or using the "Distribute Vertically" tool, which only spaces
objects relative to each other rather than allowing a user to define a specific
gap. I would like to request a dedicated vertical row-spacing input field in
the Position and Size sidebar properties panel that brings the precise row
control of a table to grouped objects and independent shapes.
Steps to Reproduce:
Open LibreOffice Draw or Writer.
Insert multiple shapes or objects aligned vertically.
Attempt to define an exact, identical numerical distance (e.g., exactly 3.00
cm) between the rows simultaneously using a single properties field, similar to
adjusting row properties in a table.
Actual Results:
No dedicated vertical "Row Spacing" or "Distribute by exact measurement" input
field exists for independent objects. The user must manually edit the
Y-coordinate for every single row, whereas a table format would handle row
constraints automatically.
Expected Results:
A dedicated vertical spacing/row constraint field should be available in the
Sidebar under Position and Size. This would function like a table's row
properties, allowing users to instantly format free-form grid layouts and
object rows down to the millimetre without manual coordinated maths.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
Additional Info:
This feature would massively improve the workflow for users designing precise
technical grids, custom target sheets, templates, and complex graphic layouts
where symmetry and exact vertical measurements are required, giving
free-floating elements the same reliable row logic found inside a table.
