Bug ID: 172821
Summary: DOCX file increases in size, then saving it as ODT
increase the size by 10-100x
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.2.4.2 release
Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
When creating a new document and always saving it as a DOCX (for sharing with
others), the size keep increasing after editing and saving. The real problem
occurs when trying to convert to ODT, the size suddenly increases by a factor
of 10 to 100 times. Example: a file with 4 pages (860 words) has a 6mb size as
DOCX, and trying to saving as ODT afterwords make it a 76mb file.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Create a file and save it as docx
2. Edit, adding words, lists, tables, headers with small images, and footnotes
3. Check size increase to a few Mb
4. Save as ODT file, the size increases by 10-100 times
Actual Results:
The file increases in size, libre office takes longer to open both files.
Expected Results:
The size shouldn't change much from one format to another, the size should be
reasonable for the content. Similar to the size of a native LibreOffice file
(always saved as odt)
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: Yes
Additional Info:
The original file I shared came from a PC of a friend running Linux Mint, and
the docx had a size of 6mb. When I edited in my PC to remove some personal
information, running Pop! OS 22.04 LTS, the docx file decreased to 600kb.
However this file when saved as ODT increased to a 76mb behemoth.
