Reading the documentation, this option seams to tells LibreOffice how to treat text (or empty cell) when encountered as operand in an arithmetic operation or as argument to a function that expects a number instead. For example, let say the value in A1 is =B1. A1 refers to an empty cell (B1) with no operand in an arithmetic operation or as argument to a function that expects a number instead. Therefore, I would expect that this option has no effect if A1 only refers to an empty (or Null) cell. Furthermore, giving the above, I would expect A1 to be the same as B1 i.e. Empty whether this option is set or not. Am I correct in interpreting this option (being check or not)?
