In Word, the width of this "style display margin" is a user preference. (I find the spotlight superior in several ways: gives a quick overview through color coding, shows paragraph and character styles, shows direct formatting.) If the conditional is too much effort, please consider the Word way of making the canvas padding a user preference. Even an "expert option" would be OK. If this is still too much effort, consider increasing the canvas padding always. We're talking about a required space of ~3em.
