--- Comment #1 from V Stuart Foote <[email protected]> ---
This is by design, and is an AutoCorrect function enabled by default, but is
easily suppressed if that meets work flow needs.

The adjustment is found in Tools -> AutoCorrect -> AutoCorrect Options, and on
the 'Options' tab find the stanzas:

'Delete spaces and tabs at beginning and end of paragraph'
'Delete spaces and tabs at end and start of line'

Both are enabled by default in per-user profile.

Also should note, rather than starting a paragraph using a <tab> or <spaces>
which is manual Direct Formatting (DF) that is difficult to maintain
consistency for longer documents, and even harder to make bulk changes. Users
should instead explore use of paragraph style, and set indentation and margin
behaviors within the style--which when applied, can then be modified globally
for documents of unlimited size with a simple and consistent change.
