I have since rolled back to LO 4.0.4.2. This isn't the first time this has happened with LibreOffice, the same thing occurred with one or more releases of the 3.x series on OS X 10.5.x. Unfortunately I can't recall the precise version numbers or bug numbers relating to that issue or what the cause was ultimately identified as.
