Bug ID: 173096
Summary: Writer crashes while editing a large ODT document;
AutoRecovery restores an incomplete older state and
recent work/images are lost
Product: LibreOffice
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: Windows (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
I use LibreOffice Writer professionally to create and format educational books.
I am experiencing repeated crashes while editing large ODT documents.
The latest crash occurred on August 10, 2026 while I was working on an
approximately 418-page ODT document containing formatted text, tables and
images.
I had been editing the document for several hours and had made many
corrections. Writer suddenly crashed. When I restarted LibreOffice, Document
Recovery was offered, but the recovered document did not represent its state
immediately before the crash. All the corrections made during that day's work
were missing, and images were also missing.
I checked the LibreOffice backup folder, but no usable backup was available. I
also checked the Windows Temp folder. Recent temporary files related to the
time of the crash were 0 KB. Windows Previous Versions also contained no
recoverable version.
This has happened more than once while working on large book documents, so the
problem is causing serious loss of work. This is not an isolated incident.
LibreOffice Writer has crashed repeatedly while I have been working on my
books, and on multiple occasions I have had to redo substantial parts of my
work because the most recent changes were not recovered. This has resulted in a
significant loss of time and work.
Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open a large ODT document in LibreOffice Writer (approximately 418 pages,
containing formatted text, tables and images).
Work on and edit the document for several hours, making corrections and
changes.
Writer unexpectedly crashes during editing.
Restart LibreOffice and use Document Recovery.
Open the recovered document.
2.
3.
Actual Results:
Writer crashes unexpectedly. After restarting LibreOffice, Document Recovery
restores an older or incomplete state of the document. Several hours of recent
corrections are missing, and images are also missing. No usable recent backup
or recovery file could be found.
Expected Results:
Writer should not crash while editing the document. If a crash occurs, Document
Recovery should restore the most recent recoverable state of the document
without losing recent changes or images.
Reproducible: Sometimes
