Bug ID: 173180
Summary: The user profile has been rewritten after restarting
in Safe Mode and opening a file from Win-Explorer.
Product: LibreOffice
Version: unspecified
Hardware: All
OS: All
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: Writer
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
I restarted LO Writer in Safe Mode (Help > Restart in Safe Mode) and opened a
file from Windows Explorer.
After switching back to normal mode, I noticed that my user profile had been
rewritten (e.g. keyboard shortcuts and the default template).
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Help - Restart in Safe mode
2. Press "Continue in Safe Mode"
3. Open an .odt file from Win(11) Explorer
Actual Results:
The user profile will be overwritten.
However, the user profile will not be overwritten if you click on Create Writer
document in Safe Mode or if the relevant file is opened (instead of Step 3
above) via the Writer menu (File > Open).
Expected Results:
When LO is open in Safe Mode, the user profile should not be overwritten when a
file is opened via Windows Explorer.
Furthermore:
1. Any potential changes to the user profile should only take place after a
warning has been displayed, allowing the user to create a backup or, where
appropriate, for a backup to be created automatically.
2. The Safe Mode window should include the option to continue with the current
profile (the default ‘Restore from Backup’ option cannot be deactivated so that
no option is highlighted).
3. It is unclear what the difference is – or whether there is any difference at
all – between closing the window when Safe Mode starts by clicking the ‘X’ in
the top-right corner and clicking ‘Continue in Safe Mode’.
4. The option for a manual profile backup, which is currently hidden under
‘Advanced’, should be on the main page and clearly visible; users may not
always realise the importance of performing a backup.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
Additional Info:
I only entered Safe Mode to resolve a different bug, where this procedure had
been recommended to me for testing a particular behaviour. In an effort to help
the LO community, I ended up losing all my settings, and it took me an enormous
amount of time to restore my user profile to its original state, as I’d
manually created my last backup over a year ago and had made several changes to
the profile since then...
