With the value preselected by default, the user can overwrite the entire current value immediately with no need to manually select the existing value, or the up / down arrows can be still be used when the initial value is highlighted. Manually editing (only) part of the value is usually a less-frequent action. For "empty", -1. Being able to read (and copy) the current value is still useful.
