Bug ID: 173246
Summary: Writer: mouse-drag text selection autoscroll stalls
for ~5 seconds, then accelerates excessively
Product: LibreOffice
Version: 26.2.5.2 release
Hardware: x86-64 (AMD64)
OS: Linux (All)
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: medium
Component: LibreOffice
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Description:
When selecting text in Writer with the mouse and dragging the pointer beyond
the top or bottom edge of the visible document area, the automatic scrolling
behaves incorrectly.
For approximately the first five seconds, scrolling is extremely slow,
stuttering, or appears almost frozen. After this delay, autoscroll suddenly
accelerates to a very high speed.
Normal document scrolling works correctly. Text selection and scrolling using
the keyboard also work correctly.
The issue is specifically reproducible when holding the left mouse button and
extending a text selection beyond the visible edge of the Writer document.
Steps to Reproduce:
1. Open a Writer document containing enough text for several pages.
2. Click somewhere in the text and keep the left mouse button pressed.
3. Drag the pointer upward or downward to select text.
4. Move the pointer beyond the top or bottom edge of the visible document area.
5. Keep the mouse button pressed and observe the automatic scrolling.
Actual Results:
For roughly five seconds, autoscroll is very slow and stutters or appears
almost stuck.
After this delay, scrolling suddenly accelerates and becomes extremely fast,
making it difficult to select the intended amount of text.
Expected Results:
While extending a text selection beyond the visible document area, Writer
should autoscroll smoothly and predictably, without the initial delay or sudden
excessive acceleration.
Reproducible: Always
User Profile Reset: No
Additional Info:
The issue is reproducible with:
LibreOffice 26.2.5.2
LibreOffice 25.8.7.3
VCL: kf6 (cairo+wayland)
gtk3 VCL under Wayland
The issue was also reproduced by launching LibreOffice with:
SAL_USE_VCLPLUGIN=gtk3 GDK_BACKEND=wayland libreoffice --writer
The following settings do not affect the issue:
Tools → Options → LibreOffice Writer → View → Smooth scroll: tested both
enabled and disabled
Hardware acceleration: tested both enabled and disabled
Keyboard-based text selection and scrolling work normally:
Shift + Arrow
Ctrl + Shift + Arrow
This suggests that the problem is specific to mouse-drag selection
autoscrolling rather than general scrolling or text selection.
The issue can be reproduced in a normal multi-page Writer document using plain
text. Normal mouse-wheel scrolling and keyboard selection are not affected.
