My issue was that for words with no known synonyms, the "synonym" menu item isn't there at all, which I personally found confusing. You: Have you tried to customise the context menu in Tools -> Customise -> Context Menues? Response: With respect to the synonyms question, I see that I can include or exclude the "Synonyms" item, but not do something fancy with it like grey it out if no synonyms are found. Unfortunately, the synonyms lookup is pretty inflexible. So above, when I highlighted reign, the context menu offered me "Synonyms". But if I make that reigns, no synonyms are offered.
