            Bug ID: 173553
Summary: Extended help text for the ‘Case Sensitivity’ setting
                    in CALC
           Product: LibreOffice
           Version: 7.0.0.3 release
          Hardware: All
                OS: All
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: medium
         Component: Documentation
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
                CC: [email protected]

Description:
The current help text for the ‘Case Sensitivity’ setting promises more than the
setting can deliver. It should be described in greater detail to prevent users
from attempting to use it to make comparison functions case-sensitive.

Steps to Reproduce:
Here is the original text and a suggestion I have made to improve it.

Actual Results:
Case sensitive

Specifies whether to distinguish between upper and lower case in texts when
comparing cell contents.

Example: Type the text 'Test' in cell A1; and the text 'test' in B1. Then type
the formula "=A1=B1" in cell C1. If the Case sensitive box is marked, FALSE
will appear in the cell; otherwise, TRUE will appear in the cell.

Expected Results:
Case sensitive

Specifies whether to distinguish between upper and lower case in texts when
performing direct comparisons of cell contents.

Example: Type the text 'Test' in cell A1 and the text 'test' in cell B1. Then
type the formula `=A1=B1` in cell C1. If the *Case sensitive* box is marked,
the result will be **FALSE**; otherwise, the result will be **TRUE**.

Note:
This setting applies only to direct comparison operators (=, <>, <, >, <=, >=)
used in formulas.
Functions that perform lookups or conditional matching—such as XLOOKUP,
VLOOKUP, LOOKUP, or SUMIF—use their own comparison mechanisms and **do not
follow** this global case‑sensitivity option.

To control case sensitivity in these functions, use function‑specific methods
such as:
- converting text with UPPER() or LOWER(),
- using EXACT() for case‑sensitive comparisons,
- or applying regular expression flags (e.g., `(?-i)` for case‑sensitive
matching) in functions that support regular expressions.

Reproducible: Always
